TOWER OF LONDON

Tower of London has another name which is Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress and it’s situated in the centre of London.

It was built in the middle of the 11^th century by William The Conqueror and it was used as a prison. Nowadays is the home of the Crown Jewels of the United kingdom.

Even Queen Elizabeth I was held there as prisoner and for this reason there is a popular expression “send someone to the tower” which means “send to prison”.

In the 20^th century it was restored to have its old medieval appearance and in the First and Second World Wars it became a prison again.

Nowadays it is one of the most popular buildings in London and it’s a very interesting place for tourists.

Finally, the Tower of London was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 as it is a very important building in British and European history.
